Here’s my story.

From basketball to acting, the restaurant business, and executive coaching, my journey has been filled with invaluable leadership lessons. Each step has shaped my philosophy and approach to coaching others.

Basketball — The Foundation of Leadership

My leadership journey began at Colgate University, where I served as captain of the basketball team. During one game, we were down by 20 points at halftime. I gathered my teammates and emphasized trust and collaboration. We made a comeback and won. This taught me that effective leadership is about overcoming setbacks and fostering a strong team dynamic.

Acting — Embracing Vulnerability

After college, I explored acting. I vividly remember a rehearsal where I had to portray a character experiencing loss. Allowing myself to feel those emotions made my performance authentic. It showed me that true leadership requires vulnerability and a deep connection with others. Adaptability became essential, as unexpected moments in acting mirrored the unpredictability in leadership.

Hospitality — The Human Connection

Transitioning to the restaurant industry under Danny Meyer, I learned the importance of prioritizing people. Danny often said, “We are not in the food business; we are in the people business.” One night, a customer expressed dissatisfaction with their meal. I approached them, listened, and offered an apology. That interaction turned an unhappy guest into a loyal customer, reinforcing my belief that leadership is about service and appreciation.

Coaching — Guiding Growth

Becoming an executive coach allowed me to integrate my experiences into leadership development. Coaching isn’t about providing answers; it’s about guiding leaders to discover their strengths. I once worked with a client who struggled with delegation due to a lack of trust in his team. Through our sessions, he learned to empower his team, enhancing productivity and morale. I find joy in helping leaders develop their authentic selves and overcome challenges.

Today, I work with a range of leaders, from start-ups to established companies. A common thread I see is that everyone seeks purpose and connection in their work.

I remind my clients that “great leaders are not afraid to be vulnerable and to learn from others.” This is the foundation for trust and collaboration, and will fuel your collective success.
